ELAALRL3 The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to their contemporary context or historical background, as well as to works from other time periods.
This standard is a challenge for me.
Harlem Renaissance:
I choose Harlem Renaissance because it seemed as though it would have been a more interesting time in life, the african americans were trying to get their voices out and wanted to be recognized as themselves and not just a nothing black person.
This story relates to the Harlem Renaissance because at the time that the story was wrote, the african americans were trying to get the point over that they were good writers and jazz players. The author was a woman and at the time it was that they were trying to get their point over that they were talented and they wanted to be treated equal and for being a woman it made her even more popular.
The author was saying that America then was unequal and that white people thought that the blacks had a better life and they didn't have to worry about things like they did. But really they had things going on in their lives but they didn't show it they basically keep things to themselves and to me it seems as though it made them stronger.
"Joe got his candy and left the store. The clerk turned to the next customer. 'Wisht I could be like these darkies. Laughin' all the time. Nothin' worries 'em.'"
In the quote the clerk was a white man, who thought that Joe had a good life because he was always smiling. Joe had a rough time, his wife cheated on him with a con-artist, and just had a baby which he thought wasn't his, but that didn't get Joe down. He stayed with his wife and worked things out, and didn't let that bother him. He went back to his regular life, and stayed with his family as though nothing had even happened.
Richard Corey
Richard Corey is a disillusion of the american dream. People think that his life is so perfect because he has money, nice clothes, and nice to others, but on the inside he was going though something, that was undescribed, and his life took a down fall and he committed suicide.
A dream deferred
This poem about a dream that fades away, Langston Hughes is wondering what happenes to a dead dream that people let go of. It is connecting to the harlem renaissance because it is talking about how dreams have died and the people that died before the harlem renaissance and thought what happened to their dreams and realized that their dreams of being treating equal didnt died they were pushed aside.
The Negro speaks of rivers
Langston Hughes is saying that the african american souls had grown bigger and fuller since the harlem renaissance had started. He is noting that some of the popular african american places such as Egypt, Africa, New Orleans, and Mississippi, were some of the places that the african american soul has grown from and strengthen from. This relates to the Renaissance because it also made blacks thrive for more and try to acheive more in life and for their up coming family.
Incident
Is an example of psychoanalysis because the person in the story is looking down on themself because they are made fun of because of being black. That one thing that happened in baltimore stuck in their head for the rest of their life through all the things that they have seen and done in Baltimore.

I have learned how to better understand this standard in my first unit project by comparing the music influences such as Tina Turner and Keyshia Cole.

Unit Three
ELAALRL4: The student employs a variety of writing genres to demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of significant ideas in selected literary works. The student composes essays, narratives, poems, or technical documents.
It seems that maybe the student should know about comprehending things in various literary works, they should also know how to correctly write a essay, narratives, poem, or technical documents.
I would say I fall under the category of a Dark Romantic. I don't think that all people have a pure soul, the people that has committed murder and use drugs and alcohol can not say that God was telling them to do it.
THE BLACK CAT
"The fury of a demon instantly possessed me. I knew myself no longer. My original soul seemed, at once, to take its flight from my body; and a more than fiendish malevolence, gin-nurtured, thrilled every fibre of my frame." The transcendentalists thought that when people had a voice in their head that is was God talking to them and telling them what to do, but there is no way that God was talking to him when he pulled the cat's eye ball out of its socket.
THE RAVEN
The Raven is is based on a man who is basically scared. He is upset that his wife has died, so he stays up reading and writing, but he hears a noise and thinks somebody is at his door, when he approches the door and opens it no one is there. He sits back down and hears another noise at the window and when he opens the window it is a Raven and as the window opens the raven flys in.
The difference between the Transcendentalist and this poem is that The Raven is not talking about God, it is talking about death and the Demons inside of someone, the Transcendentalist thought that everyone was pure and had a part of God in them and this poem shows that everyone is not pure.
The raven symbolizes mornin of someone and the demon inside of someone.
ELAALRL1 The student demonstrates comprehension by identifying evidence (i.e., examples of diction, imagery, point of view, figurative language, symbolism, plot events and main ideas) in a variety of texts representative of different genres (i.e., poetry, prose [short story, novel, essay, editorial, biography], and drama) and using this evidence as the basis for interpretation.
"Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!" I shrieked, upstarting--
"Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore!
Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul has spoken!
Leave my loneliness unbroken!--quit the bust above my door!
Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!"
Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore."
This part of the story stuck out to me because its like the man in the story is telling the raven to leave him alone and quit making fun of him while he is mornin the lost of his wife. Also he is saying he doesn't want anyone to try and heal his lonliness and he would rather be lonly and hurting instead of being happy.
ELAALRL2 The student identifies, analyzes, and applies knowledge of theme in a work of American literature and provides evidence from the work to support understanding.
The difference between the Transcendentalist and this poem is that The Raven is not talking about God, it is talking about death and the Demons inside of someone, the Transcendentalist thought that everyone was pure and had a part of God in them and this poem shows that everyone is not pure.

Instead of transcendentalists that thought that God was telling them what to do and thought that people were pure.
A story of an hour
"She breathed a quick prayer that life might be long. It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long." Its like saying that she was hoping that her life would end soon but now she is hoping that she can continue on with her life.
The problem with depression is what it seems to be that she wants to solve.
ELAALRL4 The student employs a variety of writing genres to demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of significant ideas in selected literary works. The student composes essays, narratives, poems, or technical documents.
I think my way of doing this would be my writing assignments. The essay I did on Coach would be a example of this.

Unit Two
In the story Rip Van Winkle, nature was a sign of romanticism, Rip used the nature as a get away from his nagging wife, but for his couple of hours get away it turned into a twenty year vacation, because Rip dosed off and took a nap and didnt wake til twenty years later. The time Rip woke, his wife was dead, children were grown and his dog was dead. The only thing actually stayed the same was nature. "There stood the Kaatskill Mountains-there ran the silver Hudson at a distance-there was every hill and date precisely as it had always been."
The author of Rip Van Winkle has to have a great imagination to come up with this story. In romanticism, imagination is whats important rather then reason and logic, logic is something that has a fact about it not something that you can just make up. In addition to the authors imagination the people of the town have a imagination themselves, they believe everything that comes out of Rip's mouth.
The poem is talking about all three themes of Romanticism because it talks about nature and its beauty, when it states "To Nature's teachings, while from all around--
Earth and her waters, and the depths of air." The focus of common people was brought into this in this statement, "As the long train of ages glides away, the sons of men,
The youth in life's green spring, and he who goes In the full strength of years, matron and maid, The speechless babe, and the gray-headed man--"
I have given examples of identifying evidence in the last paragraph that I have wrote. The sentence that is talking about the people, supports that it is talking about common people.
Nature: It actually seems that its kind of hard to picture yourself walking through the woods and admiring nature. In these times now, people dont actually walk through the woods and admire nature, unless they actually care about the beauty of nature and the things around it. This is what Emerson is trying to encourge people to do, he wants people to see the beauty in the world. He is trying to get people to realize that just walking outside and seeing the sun is not just the sun, he wants you to see the sun for a symbol of a new day, it provides warmth and light to our day.
Self-reliance: In this reading, it seems like Emerson is trying to give advice on what ypu should do to make yourself a better person. He is also telling you that you should depend on yourself and no one else. "Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist". This is saying that you should do what you think is right for you to do even though someone else thinks something is right you, you should stand up for what you think is right for yourself and please yourself.
Transcendentalists thought that God was speaking through someone through their work and what they said, and felt that God was giving them advice on their lives, while Emerson was actually giving advice through his own words and he spoke on what he thought someone should do for themselves and thought that you should try to please yourself instead of pleasing someone else.
People probably thought that he shouldn't be in the woods all alone by himself, but he felt that he had a purpose to live in the woods by himself and thats what he wanted so he did what he felt was right for him. The man in the video he was actually living out the beauty of nature himself, he saw it for himself instead of just reading about it. Self-reliance for him was making his own home and living out in his cabin in the woods, Im pretty sure people were trying to get him to move back to the city where there were other people but he didnt want to do what people thought was right for him he wanted to do what he thought was right for himself.

MIcheal D. Vick
Michael Dwayne Vick
By: Jaquita Binns
August 19, 2009
As a successful NFL Quarterback, Michael Dwayne Vick was the overall draft pick in the 2001 NFL Draft. He was highly praised; he had endorsement contracts with Nike, EA Sports, Coca Cola, Powerade, Kraft, Rawlings, Hasbro, & Airtran. But in August of 2007 Michael Vick’s life took a down fall, he plead guilty to illegal dog fighting & illegal gambling. This landed him 23 months in a federal prison; but only served 18 months, three years probation, but following prison he was to pay a fine, & prison time suspended upon condition of good behavior. After his release from prison people were saying that they think he shouldn’t be allowed to play football anymore, but what they fail to see is that was in the past & Michael Vick was a great football player. Plenty of successful people make mistakes in life, but they aren’t protesting about that, so why ruin his career?
Michael Vick was sentenced to two years in a federal prison, but as for Donte` Stallworth a football player for the Cleveland Browns, he was sentenced to 30 days in jail but only served 24 days, for a vehicular manslaughter incident while under the influence of alcohol. Stallworth was only suspended from The National Football League for the 2009 football season. If somebody who is a professional just like Vick, gets charged for vehicular manslaughter, and gets sentenced to 30 days in jail, & gets suspended from the NFL for only one season for killing a human being that is not right. If the people who are protesting about Michael Vick have any common sense they would see that what Donte` Stallworth did was much worse then what Michael Vick did.
After his release from prison, Michael Vick was required to give half of his income, which is roughly about $8,000,000, to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, give 500 hours of community service by working in Animal Shelters, and do public service commercials advocating against animal abuse. He has done some his public service commercials, and his public speeches in Chicago to a group of youths about dog-fighting.
I am pretty sure that some of the people, who are protesting against Michael Vick playing for the NFL, were some of his fans before this incident happened. Vick is a great football player. He was one of the most highly favored African American football players. In 2002, he became a star and MVP candidate in his first season as a full-time starter. He was started in his first 15 Pro Bowl games, and only missed one game against the New York Giants on October 13, from a sprained shoulder. Vick established numerous single-game career-highs, including passes completed with 24 and pass attempts with 46 at Pittsburgh on November 10, also passing yards with 337 on the December 22 game versus Detroit.
As a conclusion, I personally think that Michael Vick is successful and has realized that his actions were wrong. Therefore those who are criticizing him about his legal actions and who are making fun of him, by making harsh cartoons and suggestions, should also think about there actions and realize they are wrong for what they are doing to him, his family, and his career. I think that Michael Vick is hurting extremely from this hatred towards him. He has a family to help support and he is having a difficult time doing this because of the way people are being about the situation. They also should think about if it was them in that situation, how would they feel if people were trying to bring their career down and it was jeopardizing their family’s life.

Unit One
ELAALRL3 The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to their contemporary context or historical background, as well as to works from other time periods.
I think I understand this more because as we discussed the world of music is better to me because as I listen to music I listen to things I can relate to, such as relationships
such as Keyshia Cole who also relates to Mary J. Blige, as you think back to the past her music is like a influence to her, it is similar to Keyshia Cole because her lyrics are also talking about dealing with break ups & cheating.
It is similar to what we do in literature because as we read things in the past we can translate it to make us understand what it is saying & as we translate it, we realize that we also can relate to some of the things going on in the present.
Dancers Story
Each dancer tells a story,
Of the victories in his life.
Battles he has fought,
Lessons learned.
He tells of the life of his Ancestors.
The story of his people,
And their struggles.
The story of the Wisdom,
Held by Elders,
And the attaining of this through.
The years in their life
He tells of the strength
His People hold
In their hearts
In their spirits
In their traditions
The power of a People
Can be seen in the dancing of the men

This poem is about how dancing is a way of telling a story. It tells the spiritual beliefs, the struggles they go through, their strengths and weakness.
The Puritans believed that everyone was a born sinner, they also believed god saved only a certain few and that Jesus did not die for all. Every one else was going to hell, and it was no way to earn God's grace. It was up to saints like Jonathan Edwards to interpret the words of God, the way THEY chose. Also sinners were in the hands of a angry God is the best known of Edwards Sermons. They also believed that there was nothing between you and hell but the air, it is only the power and mere pleasure of God that holds you up.
The Native Americans were spiritual people but they didn't exactly worship one God, unlike the Purtians they were very religious. They believed that God was the only God to worsip and that if you worshiped another God you were worshiping the Devil. In the example I gave, the navtive americans weren't exactly talking about worshiping a God but were worshiping they people, ancestors, and traditions. In the video the puritans also stated that there were only two places to be Heaven and Hell, and that you couldn't be reborn. Which means that the Native Americans were going to Hell in there eyes. But in the eyes of the Native Americans they weren't doing anything wrong, they worshiped a God but it wasn't the God that the puritans believed in.
Puritans-A person or group of people who thought that God was the reason for everything. They also thought that there are only two places you can go (Heaven or Hell).
Deism-A religion that some people worshiped God in, they thought that God created the universe but believed that God left it up to the people to run there own lives.
Deist-The people who followed the religion of Deism.
Rationalist-People who thought that things could be proven by scientfic ways, and didn't rely on God to give them what they wanted and instead turned to science for the answer to alot of things or theories.
Age of Reason-A time a frame were people started to think more then that God was the creator of everything, people such as Ben Frankin started to make theories to prove that God wasn't in control of everything.
The difference between the Puritans and the Rationalist would be they the Puritans thought that God was in control of everything and that he was the reason for everything, but the Rationalist believed in God but they didn't believe that he was in control of everything, they put some of their thoughts into scientific thoughts such as Ben Franklin, he didn't think that God was in control of everything such as lighting so he turned his thoughts into a scientifc experiment when he flew the kite and the key.
Ben Franklin was a good rationalist because he believed in God but also believed that he could do something else to make his life better then waiting on God to make it better. He also came up with a list on how he could make his life better and what he could do to make his life better. An example of one of the things would be his second thing on his list 'Silence. Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself. Avoid trifling conversation'. In this it means to me that don't just talk about what is right and wrong but talk about what you could do to help change something in your life and the lives of others.
1)Don't speak: When there's nothing nice to say about someone or something do not say anything at all.
2)Don't eat: Do not eat after 10pm.
3)Cleanliness: Keep things in place, once you are done with something put it up where it belongs.
4)School: Keep grades up; turn in assignments on time.
5)Home: Follow by the rules.
6)Phone: Cut back on how much you talk and text. Try and make a time when you should turn your phone off or restrict the calls.
7)Driving: Slow down more and try not to talk and text when you are driving.
8)Exercise: At least three times a week.
9)Stay Focus: Focus on your goals and what you have planned ahead.
10)Family: Be nicer and helpful to the family.
11)Friends: Do not influence them in a negative way, and abide by the rules their parents have made for them.
12)Organzation: Try to keep things more organized when it comes to school. Keep things in your notebook in the right place.
13)Sleeping habits: Try to go to sleep earlier, no later then 12am.
By doing these things, I could be a better person. I wouldn't be so cranky in the morning, and I would be well rested to come to school. My grades would look better and I would be able to focus on the things I have to do. Such as driving, if I do not try to talk and text during the time that I'm driving I would be able to focus more on the road. Eating late at night will cause you to be worn down and not be able to get up and but exercising you would be able to go all day because being out of shape makes you slow down and causes you to be tired real quickly and you have to have energy to keep you going. By being nicer and helping my family more often we would be able to get along more, instead of always arguing about who is supposed to do what. I have to understand that I have to abide by the parents of my friends because they make the rules for their children and want them to follow them. Just like my parents they want the best for their children and me.
I used direct quote when I listened to the story about the puritans and I talked about the beliefs they had, I also compared the native americans and the puritans by the information that I had recieved. Such as their beliefs in God, the puritans believed that everything was created and controlled by the hands of God, and they also believed that if you didnt believe in God and that you worshiped another God you was worshiping the Devil, but the native americans were very spiritual and they worshiped another God but it wasn't the Devil.

Georgia Performance Standards
The state of Georgia thinks that we should know before we get out of this class, we should understand what is going on in a story & we should also be able to guess what we think is about to happen. We should also know what a symbolism (comparing something or somebody to a object) is, such as "He is sharp as a needle". They don't actually mean that he is sharp enough to point you, they mean he is very smart. They also are saying that we should know the difference from a poem & a short story, or a essay & a novel.
